In 2013, the Missouri Action Coalition developed the Direct Care Nurses Leadership Academy with the goal of building direct care nursing leadership skills and knowledge through a content-rich, interactive mentorship program. This goal addresses three of the eight key IOM recommendations: prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health, ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning, and expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts.

To date, over 450 Missouri nurses have attended the Academy throughout the state. These nurses received valuable training related to applying leadership knowledge and skills to change processes in the workplace environment; planning and implementing an improvement change utilizing project management techniques and methods; and creating confidence and empowering direct care nurses to lead at the point of care.

The cost of attending the Academy is $150. This includes three full days of instruction over three months.

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Participants can earn 14.0 contact hours for successful completion of the Academy.

Academy Format - Includes all 3 Modules

Attendee Prework: Develop three ideas of things you would like to improve and who you would need on your team to complete the change. Arrive for Day 1 with a list of current quality and safety projects in your institution.

Module 1/Day 1: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Discuss the important core competencies for optimizing your contribution to patient care and healthcare environment.
  • Discuss aspects of visioning for a preferred future and the relationship of global thinking to patient care and working within teams.
  • Identify a project that meets specific criteria.
  • Analyze the identified project for relevance and scope.
  • Describe the stakeholders for the identified project and make a plan to address each of them.
  • Identify actions needed to complete project management plans.
  • Prepare to interview a change agent.

Module 2/Day 2: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Describe the impact nurses make on outcomes and cost leading to improved value within the U.S. health care system.
  • Explain the “why” of change.
  • Discuss change theories in relation to their own workplace environment.
  • Reflect on one’s own role as a change agent in his/her institution.
  • Create ideas and innovative thoughts to apply change to their projects.
  • Describe the quality outcomes associated with nursing actions.
  • Identify effective communication patterns.
  • Apply communication strategies to case studies and situations.
  • Identify personal assets and challenges based on self-assessment techniques.
