Home of the Missouri Action Coalition
There are a number of barriers preventing nurses from being able to respond effectively to rapidly changing health care settings and an evolving health care system. However, to improve the current regulatory, business, and organizational conditions, the power rests not solely with nurses; government, businesses, healthcare organizations, professional associations, and the insurance industry all must play a role. Working together, these diverse parties can help ensure that the health care system provides seamless, affordable, quality care that is accessible to all and leads to improved health outcomes.

In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched a two-year initiative to respond to the need to assess and transform the nursing profession and as a result, identified several core recommendations for advancing the profession. The purpose of the Missouri Action Coalition is to familiarize Missouri nurses and nurse friends with the recommendations in the IOM Future of Nursing Report and develop strategies on how to make these recommendations a reality in our state, transform the healthcare system, and improve health outcomes.

In 2013, the Missouri Action Coalition received a two-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Since then, the Coalition has made many advances and membership has increased substantially. Accomplishments include:
  • The development and delivery of 5 cohorts of the Direct Care Nurses Leadership Academy to over 120 nurses throughout the state
  • The development and delivery of the Nurses At the Table: Serving to Transform Health webinar presentation to over 200 nurses throughout the state
  • The development of a model for a Graduate Nurse Residency Program for Critical Access Hospitals
  • The development and delivery of a Speakers Bureau presentation increasing opportunity for interprofessional and community participation among a diverse group of Missouri residents in the IOM recommendations
  • The development, acceptance and release of the Missouri Articulation Program, including agreement of more than 5 schools to aid in academic progression
  • The development of the Missouri Center for Nursing
  • The planning and execution of annual Summits bringing together nurses and nurse friends for collaboration with national leaders to advance health for Missourians
The Missouri Action Coalition is led by three organization co-leads: Missouri Nurses Association, Missouri Health Advocacy Alliance, and Missouri League for Nursing. Representatives of these organizations, as well as the President of the Missouri Nurses Foundation and Executive Director of the Coalition, make up the Executive Team. The Strategic Advisory Team, comprised of twenty-five recognized nursing leaders, serves as the visionary body of the Coalition. All activities and priorities are established and completed by volunteers united in leading change and advancing health for the citizens of Missouri.
